Lü Zheng started his professional football career for Shandong Luneng where he made his league debut against Shenyang Ginde on June 26, 2004 in a 1-1 draw.[2] This led to him making several further appearances during the season, which subsequently saw him play understudy to Li Jinyu and Han Peng as the teams main striker. Often coming on as substitute he would see the team win several league and cup trophies with the 2007 Chinese Super League season personally being his most productive season as a striker when he made twenty-five league appearances, scoring five games.[3] The following season saw Lü Zheng shift positions to right-midfield and he gradually saw himself gaining more playing time as a result as well as a playing a considerably larger part in the teams title winning campaign.
Lü Zheng made his debut coming as a last minute substitute for China against Korea Republic national football team on the 17th February 2008 in a friendly that China lost 3-2.[4]
